The onslaught of homelessness amongst our children and youth in our communities is devastating.
We would like to bring to your attention some of these alarming numbers. Although counting the exact number of homeless children is difficult, a consensus emerging among researchers are that:
Nationwide, 14 million children were in poverty before the Great
Recession. Now, the U.S. Census tells us its 16 million - up two million
in two years.
Looking beyond current numbers:
-
There are 1.5 million recorded homeless children in our nation and increasing daily from 6-18yrs old
-
Homelessness makes children sick
-
97% of homeless children move, up to three times in a single year.
-
22% are separated from their family to be put in foster care or sent to live with a relative.
-
87% worry that something bad will happen to their family or themselves.
-
Homelessness devastates ALL involved.
-
44% of homeless mothers lived outside of their homes at some point during their childhood; 20% of these women were placed in foster care.
-
70% of homeless mothers placed in foster care as children have had at least one of their own children in foster care.
-
43% were sexually molested as children.
-
Within a single year over 40% of homeless children attend two different schools.
Statistics prove that there is a need for leadership development, education, the promotion of ambition, respect, self value, identification of skills and development of those skills, and mentoring.
The question is, "WHAT CAN YOU DO?!"
- Can you sponsor a family?
- Can you buy a backpack?
- A case of water?
- What about toiletries?
- A boy or girl uniform?
- Do you have a property that can house homeless youth?
